【端午起源】

The Duanwu Festival, also called the Dragon Boat Festival, is to commemorate the patriotic poet Qu Yuan.

端午节，又叫龙舟节，是为了纪念爱国诗人屈原。

Qu Yuan was a loyal and highly esteemed/respected minister, who brought peace and prosperity to the state but ended up drowning himself in a river as a result of being vilified.

屈原是一位忠诚和受人敬仰的大臣，他给带来了和平和繁荣。但最后因为受到诽谤而最终投河自尽。

People got to the spot by boat and cast glutinous dumplings into the water, hoping that the fishes ate the dumplings instead of Qu Yuan’s body.

人们撑船到他自尽的地方，抛下粽子，希望鱼儿吃粽子，不要吃屈原的身躯。

For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by glutinous dumplings and dragon boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes.

Zongzi are pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice, stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves.

It is said that people ate them in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC).

In ancient times, people believed that realgar was an antidote for all poisons, and effective for killing insects and driving away evil spirits.

Dragon boat racing is an indispensable part of the festival, held all over the country.

As the gun is fired, people will see racers in dragon-shaped canoes pulling the oars harmoniously and hurriedly, accompanied by rapid drums, speeding toward their destination.

 Folk tales say the game originates from the activities of seeking Qu Yuan's body, but experts, after painstaking and meticulous research, conclude that dragon boat racing is a semi-religious, semi-entertaining program from the Warring States Period (475-221 BC).

民间传说，龙舟游戏起源于寻找屈原身体的活动，但专家们经过艰苦细致的研究，得出结论，赛龙舟是战国时期（公元前475年至公元前221年）的一个半宗教、半娱乐的节目。

 In the following thousands of years, the game spread to Japan, Vietnam and Britain as well as China's Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Now dragon boat racing has developed into an aquatic sports item which features both Chinese tradition and modern sporting spirit.

On Dragon Boat Festival, parents also need to dress their children up with a perfume pouch.
